What’s the coolest thing made in Iowa? We know we’ve got a strong contender.
We’re excited to announce that the RM Electrode® by RetMap, manufactured by Accumold, has been officially nominated for the 2nd annual Coolest Thing Made in Iowa competition. Hosted by the Iowa Association of Business and Industry (ABI), this contest highlights innovative, Iowa-made products and celebrates the state’s manufacturing excellence.
A Breakthrough in Eye Care, Made Right Here in Iowa
The RM Electrode® is the first-ever soft, corneal contact lens electrode designed for full-field electroretinography (ERG) testing. Cleared by the FDA for patients ages 12 and up, this single-use device is a game-changer in retinal diagnostics, offering unmatched comfort and signal clarity during testing.

ERG is the only direct, objective way to measure retinal function, making it a vital tool for detecting neurodegenerative eye diseases and evaluating potential surgical benefits. With no significant advancements in ERG technology in over 40 years, the RM Electrode® stands out as a much-needed innovation in the field.
And it’s all made possible by Accumold’s world-class, micron-level precision molding.
How Precise?
- Diameter: 0.725 inches
- Thickness variation: ±10 microns — that’s ten times thinner than a human hair
- Weight: just over half a gram — over 2 million would equal the weight of 1 bale-of-hay from last year’s winner.
Let’s Win This Together
Public voting begins April 29, and we’d love your support to help the RM Electrode® secure a spot in the Top 16 and beyond.
Help us show the world that the coolest innovations are being made right here in Iowa at Accumold.
Stay tuned for voting updates and thank you for helping us celebrate what makes Iowa manufacturing truly exceptional!
