The Wearable Technologies conference took place in San Francisco on July 26th and 27th. The event takes an in-depth look at what’s next in wearable tech with the world’s brightest leaders and engineers. As exhibitors of the event, we caught up with Dr. Johannes Kreuzer, CEO of Cosinuss° in this special “hot tech” section.

How did the COVID-19 disruption to healthcare change wearable technology?

The Corona pandemic showed the potential of wearable technologies in several ways. Multiple data streams, continuously measured even when patients are at home, are a huge step in healthcare. The COVID-19 disruption was able to speed up this development a lot and changed the mindset of many clinicians. To continue this trend, an understanding of medical-grade devices, and the healthcare market overall, is mandatory.

What engineering challenges pose the greatest difficulty for wearable OEMs?

Wearable medical devices are on one side of the highly regulated medical market, but on the other side are devices designed for patients/consumers. The challenge is for engineers to operate in both worlds and meet all requirements simultaneously. This is very difficult.

What can other OEM engineering teams learn from how Cosinuss° solves problems?

If engineering teams want to have an impact, they should measure/monitor medical relevant parameters, as we do with the vital signs at Cosinuss°. Focusing on these parameters helps engineers and designers to develop the best products.

What is Cosinuss°?

Cosinuss° creates leading wearable sensors that continuously capture multiple vital signs in the ear. Vital signs tracked include heart rate, respiration rate, oxygen saturation, and body temperature. Cosinuss° is headquartered in Munich, Germany, and provides mobile sensor technologies for health care, sports, and safety applications. Since the beginning of 2020, the company is certified as a medical company.
