Advantages of additive manufacturing in micro-molding

Historically, additive manufacturing (AM) wasn’t precise enough to be used in micro molding. That has changed. The Fabrica 2.0 precision micro-AM system from Nano Dimension creates production parts capable of 1-micron layers. This makes it a complementary technology for micro injection molding.

Using AM offers a series of benefits when combined with traditional manufacturing in the following areas:

Additive Manufacturing Allows For Rapid Prototyping

Rapid prototyping has always been a fundamental advantage of AM, enabling the very fast production of parts as prototypes. Instead of taking days or weeks to produce a prototype, Fabrica 2.0 can produce them in hours. This speed of production enables a higher frequency of design iterations, leading to faster time-to-first-part.

Additive Manufacturing Supports Superior Geometric Complexity and Customization

Traditional manufacturing has constraints that prevent many novel shapes in plastic parts production or which demand far higher costs for the complexity. Direct production of 3D printed micro parts using Fabrica enables the design to utilize geometries that improve the performance of a part, without limitations. This is advantageous for small volume, challenging components or variations. Additive manufacturing will also allow additional customization and variation on mass-volume micro molded parts. This can bring an end to the era of one-size-fits-all technology and usher in an era of customization into niche markets.

No MOQs With Additive Manufacturing

Additive manufacturing has the same per part cost whether you produce 1, 5, or 500 parts. This enables low volume production without penalty, and without the need and cost of storage of inventory. AM works in parallel to traditional manufacturing by enabling production of parts while waiting for traditional tooling to go to mass production.

Fabrica 2.0 allows the production of 3D printed micro parts with astonishingly small features, with very high precision. The system delivers 1-5 micro additive layers, using precision DLP (Direct Light Processing) with the Precision N-800 material, a versatile ABS-like plastic for a wide variety of applications.
