It&#8217;s the loosely-conducted symphony of actions we endure connecting digital wearables to power. Carr<\/a><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Headphones, hearing aids, watches, Fitbits, Apple Watches, and other fancy wearables, along with all their benefits, also are a bit irritating\u2014at times, making us feel more like a 1960s telephone operator than Iron Man.<\/p>\n<p>In conjunction with the Sensors <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sensorsexpo.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Expo<\/a>, we caught up with Eric Biel who is the Principal Electrical Engineer with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.powercastco.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">PowerCast Corp<\/a> to ask what the future holds for wireless charge tech. Hopefully, it&#8217;s not this charge wall.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">hi i made an aesthetically pleasing charging station to charge all my electronics with <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/7UTcCLDlQR\">pic.twitter.com\/7UTcCLDlQR<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 ani acopian (@aniacopian) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/aniacopian\/status\/1156325505957654528?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 30, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h2>Q&amp;A With Eric Biel of PowerCast<\/h2>\n<h3>Minus the logistical, costs, and rollout issues is it possible today to have zero charge wearables?<\/h3>\n<p>Eric Biel \u2014 Yes, it is feasible to have zero \u201cwired charge\u201d wearables with wireless power maintaining the device\u2019s battery.&nbsp; However, the use-case needs to be right in order to provide the proper balance of usage versus charge time.<\/p>\n<p>As an example, a fitness tracking shirt that is worn an hour a day and then ends up in a closet or dresser for the remainder of the day is a great use case.&nbsp; A fitness band that is worn throughout the day but then taken off for recharging overnight is another example.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2552\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2552\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accu-mold.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Eric-Biel-PowerCast.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2552\" src=\"https:\/\/www.accu-mold.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Eric-Biel-PowerCast-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"Eric Biel of PowerCast\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2552\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Eric Biel. PowerCast<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>How will OEMs have to change their practices to account for new RF charging tech? What are the projected manufacturing difficulties?<\/h3>\n<p>Eric Biel \u2014 I think a lot of it is setting the expectations of the consumer using their devices.&nbsp; Today, most consumers are familiar with the need to plug-in their device when batteries are low.&nbsp; They then expect a full charge relatively quickly.<\/p>\n<p>After charging, the device may operate for days without needing to be charged again.&nbsp; With long-range wireless power, devices can be recharging most of the time.&nbsp; So, instead of having to provide a quick charge from dead to full, the use-case becomes more about always keeping your device topped off.<\/p>\n<p>On the manufacturing side, our RF harvesting chips are extremely consistent in performance.&nbsp; The biggest manufacturing challenge is on antenna consistency.&nbsp; We frequently work with OEMs to make sure that the RF harvesting antenna is properly designed because it\u2019s a bit different than a simple RF communication antenna.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3>Will wireless charge tech be efficient enough, where a full-scale global solution would remove our dependence on batteries or fuel cells?<\/h3>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eric Biel \u2014 That\u2019s definitely a long term goal.&nbsp; But, obviously, long-range wireless power has specific markets that are the best fit.&nbsp; As the power requirements of devices continue to be reduced, additional markets will open up.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We currently have products today that don\u2019t even need batteries.&nbsp; Likewise, there are products that have batteries, and RF is used to augment the lifetime or eliminate the wire altogether.&nbsp; So we&#8217;re happy to help remove the dependence on batteries but are also realistic in that supplementing\/augmenting battery life is just as valuable.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p><em>Accumold is a world leader in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.accu-mold.com\/examples\/?filter=market#military-aerospace\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">emerging technology micro molding<\/a> and we love to highlight the most innovative minds in the field.
